Salt and Light
Thursday, April 28th, 2005Sayeth Jesus in Matthew 5:13-16
13 Your are the salt of the earth. But if a salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It’s no longer good for anything. Except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
14 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Be the salt and light of the earth.
What does that mean? I hear this verses often but dun really understand them. Until recently.
Light – it’s quite self explanatory in the bible. Jesus called us to be His ‘holy instruments’ and shine forth His glory. As Christians, we are being watched by others all the time. We wanna shine, shine, shine. In this corrupted place, we wanna be different. Rom 12:2.
Salt – Explanations I got for this is interesting.
If there is a bag of unsalty salt, who would want to buy it? Same here, as Christians, we wanna live like one. No doubt Christians are still sinners and very much prone to sin, but we are forgiven sinners. Every time we lie, lust, get greedy, disobedient, impatient, get jealous, etc etc, we should think of the flogs that were flung to towards the back of our Lord, gripped His flesh and brutally tore it apart. And lest nobody ask me “Why are you acting like that, you are a Christian….” That’ll be like a bag of salt that is not salty. If people say “I am not surprised you acted like that, you are a Christian, and your God must be a great God” then I know that I am a bag of salty salt. A Christian that acts like one.
Another illustration would be this. In the ancient times whereby refrigerators weren’t invented yet, the use of the salt is to prevent food from decaying. Today, Christ’s calling us to be salt (that’s salty, of course) is to prevent the decay of the world.
What a calling…
Therefore, be the salt and light of the earth.
